Filing an Insurance Claim? What You Need to Know..

Your business can be demanding enough – who has time to worry about filing a claim?

While filing an insurance claim can often seem confusing and even intimidating for many business owners, there are plenty of things you can do to make the process go as smoothly as possible. Create a Safe Workplace

Before the need to file an insurance claim ever arises, you should take steps to ensure your workplace and your employees are safe. Have an evacuation plan in the event of disaster, fire or other unsafe conditions, conduct regular drills so that your employees know what to do and where to go in case of an emergency, and follow all health and safety regulations. Such preparations can not only save lives, but they also help reduce liability and thereby can simplify the entire claims process.

File a Police Report

For some accidents or incidents where a crime has occurred, such as theft, you will need to contact the police. The police report is an important item in your insurance claim as it helps the adjuster understand the circumstances surrounding the incident. In some instances, your insurance policy may even require that a police report be filed. The police may ask you to sign the report, but before doing so, make sure you read it over carefully to verify it is complete and free of errors.

Take Pictures

We all walk around with cameras in our pockets, which means there's no excuse not to properly document a scene when an incident occurs. So long as it is safe to do so, you should take pictures of the incident site as soon as possible to provide photographic evidence in support of your claim.
Try to document as much of the surroundings as you can, as well. For example, if you are filing a commercial auto insurance claim for a vehicle accident, take pictures of not only the vehicle itself but also skid marks, road signage and anything else that may be relevant to an investigation. These photos will paint a more accurate picture of what happened, which can expedite the process.

Make an Internal Report
